Growth and welfare effects of business cycles in economies with idiosyncratic human capital risk

چکیده

This paper uses a tractable macroeconomic model with idiosyncratic human capital risk and incomplete markets to analyze the growth and welfare effects of business cycles. The analysis is based on the assumption that the elimination of business cycles eliminates the variation in idiosyncratic risk. The paper shows that a reduction in the variation in idiosyncratic risk decreases the ratio of physical to human capital and increases the total investment return and welfare. If the degree of risk aversion is less than or equal to one, then economic growth is enhanced. This paper also provides a quantitative assessment of the macroeconomic effects of business cycles based on a calibrated version of the model. Even for relatively small degrees of risk aversion (around one) the model implies that the elimination of business cycles has substantial effects on investment in physical and human capital, economic growth, and welfare.  2003 Elsevier Inc. Welfare Cost of Business Cycles When Markets are Incomplete

This paper analyzes the welfare costs of business cycles when workers face uninsurable idiosyncratic labor income risk that has a cyclical component. In accordance with the previous literature, this paper decomposes individual labor income risk into an aggregate and an idiosyncratic component and assumes that these two components are stochastically independent. In contrast to the previous liter...

Dating Business Cycle in Oil Exporting Countries

In this paper, we empirically investigate the relationship between oil price changes and output in a group of oil exporting countries. The dynamics of business cycles in Libya, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Kuwait, Venezuela and Qatar are modeled by alternative regime switching models. We show that the extension of uni-variate Markov Switching model in order to include oil revenue improves dating busi...

Idiosyncratic Production Risk, Growth and the Business Cycle

We introduce a neoclassical growth economy with idiosyncratic production risk and incomplete markets. The general equilibrium is characterized in closed form. Uninsurable production shocks introduce a risk premium on private equity and typically result in a lower steady-state level of capital than under complete markets. In the presence of such risks, the anticipation of low investment and high...

Risk and Return in Networked Village Economies

We apply the Consumption-based Asset Pricing Model (CCAPM) of the finance literature to study the risk and return of household business assets in developing economies. Using monthly panel data from a household survey in rural Thailand, we find that higher exposure to aggregate, non-diversifiable risk, as measured by household beta or the co-movement of the return of the individual household ent...

Heterogeneous Risk Preferences and the Welfare Cost of Business Cycles.

I study the welfare cost of business cycles in a complete-markets economy where some people are more risk averse than others. Relatively more risk-averse people buy insurance against aggregate risk, and relatively less risk-averse people sell insurance. These trades reduce the welfare cost of business cycles for everyone. Indeed, the least risk-averse people benefit from business cycles. Moreov...
